Bei Heidi und Toni

Mettlen an der Nebelgrenze
Am Freitag reiste Wayne an ein Spiel nach Cardiff. Er unterstützt das neusseeländische Rugby-Team, the “all blacks”.

Wayne is seen off on the 9:18am train to Lucerne, by Benedikt, (to fly to London then drive to Bath so he can see his rugby game on Saturday at Cardiff). Soon after, Conny, Benedikt and Ruth go by car to visit Heidy, Tony, Simon and Tabea. They live in the pre-alps with amazing views of the valley and Schüpfheim and the surrounding mountains. Tony took Conny and Ruth on a tour of the pigs, barn and milking area and taught us a lot. We saw 2 calves (one 10 days old) and one that has very recently had its horns surgically removed). We had a wonderful lunch in the summerhouse, which is an outdoor standalone room to catch the sun and the views.

Tabea mit den ZiegenThe blessing for the food was sung in Swiss German, Ruth knew the tune so could sing the same in English -”For life and health and daily food we give Thee thanks Oh LORD, for fellowship and all good things we praise Thy Name Oh LORD”. Lunch was homegrown potatoes, salad, and even homemade sausages! followed by schenkeli (look like sausages but are cookies), vermicelles (a mix made with chestnuts and piped thru’ a spagetti forcep), served on icecream and meringue. Followed by a redcurrant and blueberry cake also made by Heidy! David and Sarah biked for an hour over high hills to join us for lunch then afterwards cycled home the slightly easier and faster way. We really needed some exercise after such a meal, the remaining 7 of us drove to the Schrattenfluh and climbed up past an alp (summer farm) and up to the Karrenfeld to view the karst (the phenomenon that erodes teh dolomite rocks as a result of acid rain). We took SO many photos, saw many dead trees in the dying forest - killed by boring insects attacking the bark of trees weakened again by acid rain). It was a hugely happy and satisfying day. Benedikt is a great teacher (David, Simon and Sarah are very blessed) and he did his thesis on the erosion of these mountains so Ruth learnt a lot).
Ruth und HeidiAs we reached the car to take us down to our homes (and Tony to his milking) we had wonderful photo shots of 6 1/2 year old Tabea (swiss german for the biblical Tabitha) and some friendly goats - a beautiful wee girl with blond hair, fair complexion and brown eyes and a pink t-shirt! We had a wonderful drive down the valley, waterfalls seen thru’ autumn leaves of the deciduous forest, but the comment that sums up the day comes from 13 year old Simon. He was asked how he was feeling (he had sat and waited with Conny and Tabea while the rest of us climbed higher) - his lovely comment was CONTENT. He is a rich young man - a happy home in the hills with a great view and something money cannot buy - contentment! May God continue to bless him and his family into the future.
